My fiancee has Hep C-1 and is now part of a double-blind experiment from Vertex. He took the first dose today. It is interferon/ribavirin and telepravir (experimental phase 2). They are treating him for free because we can not afford health coverage. He is 2 years clean and sober and works at a residential treatment facility. I am scared. He is so sick, he sounds different already, cold, hot, aches, pains, he sounds like he's doped up. Kinda spacey. He's freaking out and so am I. We thought this would save his life and was a blessing from God himself. Now I am scared he may never be the same. He is healthy and has no symptoms of the disease except occasional fatigue. Please help I think we have made a terrible mistake.

Interferon has been proven to cause drug relapse so expect your fiancée to go back on what ever he took before, it is not his fault, it is the fault of the doctors and interferon. STOP, STOP NOW before it is to late.

it has been four years since i have been off the treatment for hep c. my viral count was 25 million, i did every treatment for six months, now more and more side effects are happening, there is no place on my body that does not hurt, joints, muscles, spasms that make golf balls out of my muscles, i get sores in my mouth, i get tired and exhausted from doing anything, i am depressed, i spent five days in the university hospital in denver trying to figure out what is happening to my brain, it isn't seizures, the dr tells me my brain goes to sleep? these spells take me to my knees, sometimes i know when they happen, they can last minutes, i break a bad sweat, i appear frozen in time, my body gets cold to the touch, i sometimes see lights and i know it is happening, i have a hard time sleeping, i have been losing weight like crazy, i was at 163 and now at 119, i am a walking skeleton, tests and more tests have been run, but no one seems to know what i am up against, all this has started since the hep c treatment i was on.
has anyone else had their body fall apart on them?
i need some help, i need some answers as to what is happening to me. thank you ronnie

I am very sorry that you are going thru this.
What is happening to you is most likely brain damage caused by interferon. The problems you describe are consistent with interferon use. This happens to most people who use interferon to some degree. Doctors do not tell it like it is.
There are some things you can do to try and help but they take time and are not completely predictable. Brain damage is difficult to treat. Doctors are not going to give you a good diagnoses. I read emails like yours everyday. It hurts my soul, shatters my world and causes me much pain to know that the same things that have been done to your life are being done to unsuspecting lives everyday in the name of medicine. Doctors across the land are knowingly destroying lives everyday for the shame of money. They know what happened to you happens to a large number of interferon users, it is well published. They deny the charge, prescribe the drug and take the money, $10.000.00 for new prescriptions and even more. I will attach a front page article about huge pay for doctors who prescribe interferon for hepatitis c .
Each day I receive many emails from people who believe their doctors, I do my best to try and talk each and every person out of using interferon as there is no way to predict the side effects. These are common, not rare. I completely hate to lose the battle with each person who calls or emails and says they are going to do what their doctor wants them to because he/she knows best. The world we live in is not the land of the good doctor, it is the land of Big Pharma and pathetic lying deceptive practices for the sloe sake of MONEY. People will not believe until it happens to them, then it is to late.
Just one minute before your email I received one from a man that is non-detected for HCV but his life has been damaged so much that he would have been far better off with hepatitis c than to have used interferon.

I haven't spoken to you in too long, hope all is well with everyone, as you know you totally turned my life around in 1999 when I thought I was "dead meat". I am due for blood work, should be going in the next week or so and I will again send you results - I'm the one with the baby on the east coast, I was non-detected and then it came back, the little devil. Anyway, one of my doctors gave me Bactrim, a sulfa type antibiotic for a urinary tract infection and I had such a bad reaction - then I saw that it can cause liver damage, etc, which I didn't know. I stopped taking it, and now he said to take Cipro, have you got any info on these antibiotics? Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease - the infection isn't major - it may even go away on it's own, but from the Bactrim I started feeling heaviness around the liver, couldn't sleep, got dizzy, lowered my blood pressure, yikes!

The antibiotics can raise the viral load millions of points. Many antibiotics do cause liver failure. This is well known and was published in 1998; I posted the document on my message board somewhere.
