Previously Unforeseen Risk Tarnishes Hep C Wonder Drugs

The improvement in Hepatitis C treatment success marks a dramatic change in the prognosis for most Hepatitis C diagnoses. New direct-acting antiviral drugs boast viral eradication rates in the high 90th percentile, rendering hope that the Hepatitis C virus can be eradicated. Until recently, the only major obstacle surrounding these Hepatitis C medications has been their outrageously high cost. However, a large-scale prospective study has revealed a surprising caveat – revealing that the direct-acting antiviral drugs for Hepatitis C may not be the panacea the medical community had been hoping for.

Hep C Wonder Drugs Bring More Liver Cancer

A New Hepatitis C Lawsuit in the Works

Hepatitis C lawsuits may be emerging soon after the FDA issued a Black Box Warning for 9 direct acting antiviral (DAA) medications this October 2016. Patients who have taken DAA medications and seen a reemergence of their Hepatitis B, experienced liver damage, or suffered liver failure, may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the drug manufacturers. According to the FDA, this reactivation usually occurred within 4-8 weeks of receiving DAA treatment drugs. During clinical trials, this potentially deadly side effect was not discovered because researchers only recruited patient with Hepatitis C and no co-infections.

Zepatier beats Harvoni, Sovaldi in hep C clinical-data safety showdown: Advera Health Analytics

February 24, 2016 | By

It's still early days for Merck's hep C combo Zepatier, but the drug could be a frontrunner in terms of safety. In a new data analysis, Zepatier turned up proportionally fewer serious side effects than Gilead Sciences' hep C combo treatment Harvoni and its veteran hep C med Sovaldi.

SolvaldiHealthcare informatics firm Advera Health Analytics looked at clinical trial data for the three drugs and found that while Harvoni and Sovaldi's labels have worrisome side effects such as cardiac arrest and suicidal ideation, Zepatier does not have the same side effects listed. Zepatier is less risky than Sovaldi, according to Advera's report, but the drug's safety is on par with Harvoni, Advera said.

Zepatier and Harvoni worked almost equally well in treating individuals in clinical trials who had already undergone treatment. Harvoni was more effective than Zepatier and Sovaldi in patients who hadn't been treated previously, though, according to the report.

Sovaldi undisclosed Side Effects could include blindnessI was approved for Harvoni, my Dr.prescribed 12 was of Harvoni.i as so excited I was approved within 3 days of paperwork  being submitted. I stuck to the plan religiously, but 10 days into Tx started having severe vision loss in my left eye. My right eye had been operated on by a renowned Opthamologist over two years ago for a dense cataract, and an artificial lens replaced the affected lens in the right eye.
